The Commission Process
The Commission is made up of close to 30 national leaders, experts and thinkers drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, including scientists, historians, conservationists, academics, business leaders, policy experts, and retired National Park Service executives. The National Parks Second Century Commission will hold five meetings at National Parks: Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Calif.; Lowell National Historical Park in Mass.; Yellowstone National Park in Wyo.; Gettysburg National Military Park in Pa.; and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tenn. At each meeting the Commission will hear from a range of subject matter experts, park managers, and the general public, culminating in a report with recommendations in the fall of 2009.
The Commission will also function through seven Working Groups, examining particular issues in depth. Commissioners will serve on Working Groups according to their interest and the background, and will tap a broader group of subject matter experts to support them. Their work will be brought together in the final Commission report.
